New E & SC Fact Sheet Published by DEPby Todd Giddings, Ph.D., P.G. The DEP Bureau of Water Supply and
Wastewater Management has published a new two-page fact sheet titled Erosion
and Sediment Control Best Management Practices For Water Well Drilling and
Aquifer Testing. During
well drilling and during pumping tests, muddy water containing cuttings needs to
be controlled to prevent impacts on streams. This fact sheet describes the best techniques to provide detention so cuttings will settle out of the flow. Techniques for residential and other low-capacity wells include constructing a shallow trench and then directing the flow across a flat, vegetated area. For medium and high-capacity wells with flows that exceed 25 gallons per minute, a sump pit is constructed, and then the settled water is pumped through a filter bag.
