McEllhiney Distinguished Lecture Hank Baski, president of Baski Inc. in Denver, Colorado, has been selected as the 2004 McEllhiney Distinguished Lecturer by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA). The lecture is titled “Ground Water: Fallacies and Forecasts.” It will answer questions such as “What commonly believed fallacies hinder optimal development of water wells?” and “What new technologies and innovations will impact the water well industry over the next decade?” Among some of the fallacies that Baski will dispel are: • The use of clear water as a drilling fluid results in the “best” well. • Airlifting cannot be trusted for reliable aquifer pumping tests and can air-bind a well. • Artificial gravel packs are needed for sand-free, high-efficiency wells. • Step pumping aquifer tests can determine well efficiency. \ He will also discuss his following forecasts: • Horizontal wells will play a greater role in water recovery and injection. • Pricing for larger wells will be based on well efficiency instead of footage. • Unique, new methods for well development will arrive. • Energy savings will drive widespread adoption of aquifer thermal energy storage. The McEllhiney Lecture Series honors William A. McEllhiney, the founding president of NGWA in 1948, and a ground water contractor and civil engineer.
