What You Missed

at the 2003 Summer Field Conference

by Todd Giddings, Ph.D., P.G.

The rain didn’t dampen any spirits at the Summer Field Conference site in Dillsburg last June.  I want to extend special thanks to Mike Baim and to Morris Industries for hosting the activities.  The more than 200 attendees were grateful that the entire site was either paved or gravel surfaced, because otherwise we would have been knee-deep in mud, because it rained right up to the end on Saturday afternoon.  Thanks to Ingersoll Rand for providing the air-rotary drill rig and to Neil Negley and his crew for operating it, and to Drillers Service Inc. for providing the grout mixer and grout.  Thanks to Ed Anderson of Baroid, Inc., for providing the EZ-Mud® polymer and the Quik-Foam® and for demonstrating the benefits of using “stiff foam”.

All of the tabletop equipment displays were under tents, and so the conditions were good to view the several variable-speed pump live demonstrations and to check out the other equipment and supplies.  There were a total of 20 tabletop exhibits and three large equipment displays.  We had 54 guests from DEP and from other agencies such as PennDOT and the PA Geologic Survey, so we succeeded in outreach and education of many individuals in addition to our members.  Our hands-on training session for our new ground-water flow models was very well attended, and Joel Jordan of the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association showed us all how to operate the models.  Finally, a group of drillers and pump installers took a lot of certification exams, with one individual taking a total of four exams.
